Where Passion Meets the Pavement
Derby City Skates was born from a lifelong love of roller skating — a love that started with our founder, Susan Konczal, skating the smooth floors and boardwalks of New York in the 1960s and ’70s.
What began as a weekend pastime soon became a way of life. Over the decades, her dedication to the sport evolved into a full-blown passion for roller derby, community, and the creativity that surrounds skating.
In 2010, Susan opened the first Derby City Skates in Winston-Salem, North Carolina — a small, family-run shop built for skaters, by skaters. It quickly became a local hub where people came not just to buy gear, but to share stories, swap parts, and keep the skate scene rolling.
A Family Tradition Rolls Forward
In 2020, Susan’s son Nicholas joined the family business, opening a second Derby City Skates location in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Set in the heart of Plaza Midwood, the shop blends old-school skate culture with modern style — keeping the same welcoming, community-first vibe that’s defined Derby City Skates since day one.
What started as one woman’s lifelong passion has become a multigenerational story — a family business dedicated to keeping skaters inspired, outfitted, and connected.
